Biography
An avant-garde sculptor, painter, and novelist. Her recognizable trait is the use of polka dots and nets in her work. In 1957, she moved to New York and exhibited her work for many years establishing her presence in the avant-garde world. She returned to Japan in 1973, and while continuing her art, she published a number of novels and anthologies. In 2006, she received the Japanese National Lifetime Achievement Awards. Her work continues to be admired internationally, and in November 2008, her 1959 painting No.2 was auctioned by Christie’s New York for over $5.7 million, which is the second highest bid ever earned by a living female artist.
